Promoting workplace health: investing in workersʼ

This article focuses on the concept of promoting workplace health. It discusses the relationship between workersʼ health and the cost incurred by organizations due to workers’ sickness absence. It presents factors that motivate employers to implement workplace health promotion. On the basis of the results of research, a relationship was established between workplace health promotion and job satisfaction, an increased level in workers’ morality and loyalty, adjustment of OSH regulations to international standards and an increase in production and productivity indicators. The article also presents Polish institutions, programmes and actions that motivate employers to implement the concept of promoting workplace health.

Evaluating musculoskeletal load and the aging of employees

This article discusses the phenomenon of the aging society and related problems as well as the impact of aging on processes taking place in human muscles. It also presents a method of evaluating musculoskeletal load and fatigue with the use of surface electromyography (EMG), taking into account the worker’s age and gender.

Assessing room acoustics at teachers workplaces in selected primary schools

This article presents research on the acoustic properties of 89 classrooms in four typical primary schools. Those properties was characterized with reverberation time (T30), speech transmission index (STI) and clarity index (C50). The results showed a large diversity in the acoustic properties of classrooms in each school and between schools. An analysis of the results showed poor acoustic conditions at teachers’ workplaces.

Tools supporting an analysis of the state of safety at schools in Poland (1)

There are barely fewer accidents at school than, e.g., all accidents at work registered by Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS). The article discusses the most dangerous places at schools, significant hazards and typical school injuries. It proposes a methodology for reducing effectively the number of accidents at school and their severity. Checklists support identifying weak points at school; this article presents their verification in 30 Polish schools.

The concept of a system of monitoring time use of the selected personal protective equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) provide workers with direct protection against threats present in the working environment. However, PPE has a certain "lifetime" related to the loss of protective parameters, which depend on, e.g., the degree of their exposure to factors in the working environment. As this is an important and complex issue, it is reasonable to seek innovative solutions on how to monitor the time of safe use of PPE. One proposal is to use radio frequency identification (RFID). This article presents the concept of a system for identifying and monitoring time use of PPE with so-called RFID tags.

Assessing dangerous occurrences at work with use of forklift trucks

The use of forklift trucks in trans-shipping work has caused, particularly in recent years, a growing number of incidents involving serious injury and even death. This paper presents the results of investigations of the causes and effects of accidents at work involving forklift trucks. Frequent threats that cause the most serious accidents were identified as were the two groups affected by those accidents: the operators and outsiders. Indicators describing the injured operators have an increasing tendency; thus, occupation safety has to be improved.

Selected problems of occupational safety at robotized beveling of metal sheets

Beveling of element edges is a most important technological operation in manufacturing steel constructions, welded with thick sheets. The quality of this process determines the quality of the welds and, in consequence, such important parameters of the final product as strength and durability. Traditional beveling is performed manually with thermal cutting. Automatizing this operation with and industrial robot makes it possible to obtain important benefits in the scope of efficiency, quality and working conditions. Especially separating the operator of the robotized cell from the cutting process eliminates most health and safety hazards. This paper presents two types of robotized beveling cells, with both oxygen and plasma cutting. Special attention is focused on selected OSH problems in those installations.
